Gilmore Girls’ final four words left Alexis Bledel just as shocked as you

When the much-hyped Gilmore Girls revival series appeared on Netflix last weekend, fans were left reeling by the final four words exchanged between Lorelei and Rory at the end of the last episode.

You’ll find no spoilers here, but we will tell you that the conversation came out of the blue – and that it seems to have left the door open for another return visit to Stars Hollow.

And Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory Gilmore, says she was just as stunned as viewers when she first learned what her final lines would be.

“[Creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] told me, and I was very shocked,” Bledel told talk show host Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night. “She told me when we were putting together this reunion.”

Sherman-Palladino originally intended those last four words to conclude the series when it ended over a decade ago, Variety reports. However, she was never able to use them – because she and her husband Dan Palladino left the show in 2007, after a dispute over contracts.

The four-episode reboot, titled A Year in the Life, allowed the show’s creator to wrap up her beloved show the way she’d always intended.

“It’s so secretive, and so Amy,” said Bledel.

The 35-year-old actress also revealed her four favourite characters from the show: Kirk, Stars Hollows’ eccentric everyman; Rory’s neighbour Babette; the chain-smoking dance teacher Miss Patty; and Caesar, the put-upon chef at Luke’s Diner.

“I think Caesar is awesome,” she told Fallon. “He’s underrated, he’s amazing.”

While the ending of A Year in the Life seemed to suggest that we haven’t seen the last of Rory and Lorelei, Sherman-Palladino has so far remained vague about whether fans will ever be treated to a second reboot.

When asked about the possibility of producing more Gilmore Girls episodes, the writer and director told the Hollywood Reporter that she was waiting to see how fans responded to A Year in the Life before making any decisions.

“We really had a very specific journey in our minds and we fulfilled the journey. So to us, this is the piece that we wanted to do. And the whole thought about, ‘Is there more, is there more, is there more?’ – this has to go out into the universe now. We've got to put this to bed,” she said.

“And then whatever happens, happens.”
