Doubters placed bets on this union failing from the minute they tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in India in 2010. Sadly, they were proved right as Russell filed for divorce in Los Angeles just before New Year, citing irreconcilable differences. Still, he and Katy did fairly well compared to other infamously short-lived marriages in Hollywood...

The shortest marriage on history prize, however, goes to showbiz's princess of pop Britney, whose marriage to childhood friend Jason was annulled within 48 hours in 2004, following a fun-filled evening in Vegas (we've all been there).

Married: 9 days

It was also a case of Vegas love for these two, who also found themselves man and wife in Sin City back in 1998. Dennis called for an annulment nine (presumably not-so-happy) days later.

Vegas also cast its fickle spell on Cher and musician Gregg Allman, who got hitched in the city in 1975 - days after Cher had divorced Sonny Bono. The singer filed for divorce just over a week later.

Married: 2 weeks

Eddie and Tracey went through a proper wedding ceremony in front of friends and family on New Year's Day 2008. But sadly it wasn't to be, with the couple releasing a bizarre statement two weeks later which read, "While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends."

This couple dated for six years before marrying in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2004. However, their lengthy relationship couldn't guarantee a happy ending. They split 14 days later, with Ali saying she had found "really strong evidence" of Mario's infidelity.

Despite their catchy-sounding names, Ethel and Ernest's wedding began unravelling on their honeymoon in 1964. According to Oscar-winner Ernest, Ethel was jealous of the amount of attention he received. "By the time we got home, it was hell on earth," he recalled in 2001. "And after 32 days I said to her, 'Madam, bye.'"

Married: 8 weeks

The Saturday Night Live comedian wed his model girlfriend after a whirlwind romance. "It feels real and honest, and I have more of a continuous smile than I have ever had before," he said of the 2008 California ceremony. But it turns out he spoke too soon and just two months later, they split.

Married: 72 days

Their lavish wedding was caught on camera for reality TV - but Kim 'n' Kris blamed irreconcilable differences as a reason to throw the towel in after just 72 days.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage," Kim said in a statement. "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."

Nicky took a leaf out of Britney's book by getting married in a 2:30am ceremony in Vegas, back in 2004. The cracks quickly showed in her and New York businessman Todd's marriage and it was later annulled.

They seemed an unlikely pairing and so it was that Nicolas and Lisa Marie surprised no one by ending their marriage after just three months, in 2002. Lisa later branded the union "a big mistake."

Renée's 2005 wedding to country singer Kenny on the Caribbean island of St. John was picturesque but not to last. Four months later, they sought an annulment with "miscommunication" and "fraud" among the reasons cited.

It was the rocker wedding of the year, with all-night celebrations aboard a Saint Tropez yacht. But four months after the July 2006 ceremony, Pamela filed for divorce from her token bad boy and the party was over.

They got married in the south of France in 2006 but the ink barely had time to dry before these two started having problems. At the time of their separation four months later, they admitted they had "been separated for quite a while."

Drew's marriage to Tom failed to make the half year mark back in 2001. "I'm not going to lie about it; it's upsetting to me," Drew later said. "I wanted it to work." But at least the union lasted longer than Drew's previous one-month marriage to bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994.

The One Tree Hill duo hit the rocks after five months in 2005, when reports of his alleged infidelity surfaced. "I can't say there are no hard feelings... I feel hurt, humiliated and broken-hearted," Sophia said afterwards.

It was a case of too much, too young for 90210 actress Shannen Doherty when she wed Ashley after knowing him for only a few weeks in a "bring-your-own-beverage" party in 1993. Shannen filed for divorce five months later.

Charlie and his first wife Donna's marriage lasted just a few months in 1995, as Charlie suggested she had "changed." He compared her to "a bad car," adding, "If it breaks down, what are you gonna do?" Poignant.

This 2001 union between celebrity choreographer Cris and J.Lo made it through the New Year before falling apart. A statement read, "Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd have announced they have resolved all issues arising out of their marriage. The resolution was extremely amicable ... The two will remain friends." Soon after, J.Lo began dating Ben Affleck.

Married: 10 months

These two's marriage is fairly lengthy compared to those we've read about so far. But even they only lasted 10 months, after Jim filed for divorce from his Dumb and Dumber co-star.
