It may be 24 years since Hocus Pocus came out (yes, really), but one of the film's iconic stars has paid tribute to the film via her pregnancy announcement.
Hocus Pocus is one of the best films of the Nineties, hands down. In fact, strike that: it’s one of the best films of all time – yep, we said it – and there will never be a Halloween when we don’t feel like watching the resurrected Sanderson sisters wreak havoc on the people of Salem, Massachusetts.
Not only did it boast a phenomenal cast (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, to name just three), but it was packed full of subversive feminism and catchy musical numbers, too.
Remember this?
And this?
Exactly.
Of course, the film was packed to the brim with excellent female characters – and, witches and Dani aside, the endlessly competent and capable Allison was a force to be reckoned with.
Not only was she the one who warned Max, in no uncertain terms, not to light the black flame candle, but she also came up with plenty of plots and schemes to overthrow Winnie, Mary and Sarah Sanderson. And, when her school pal was in dire danger, she leapt in front of him and surrounded the pair of them with salt, in a bid to protect him from the forces of evil.
All in all, she was a total badass.
Nowadays Vinessa Shaw, who played the character, stars in the likes of Cold In July, After the Fall, and Clinical – but, to the world, she will always be loved for her stint in Hocus Pocus. And she knows it, too.
So when it came to announcing that she’s pregnant with her first child, she decided to bewitch millennials everywhere with a callback to the Nineties film.
To begin with, Shaw and her husband Kristopher Gifford posted a photo of them posing at what looked like a typical red carpet event. But, if you look a little closer at the backdrop, you’ll see there’s a little more to it than meets the eye.
“Great news,” Shaw captioned the shot. “We are proud and excited to share that we are expecting a little one early next year.
“My hubby is a graphic designer, so I hope you appreciate his cheekiness.”
So far, so clever. But then Shaw took things one step further with this retro twist on the announcement.
“Maybe I should have used this for my pregnancy announcement?” she captioned it.
We’re obsessed. Can we all start announcing any and all personal news using Hocus Pocus quotes from now on, please? Thanks.
