Here at Stylist we do love to muse upon the intellectual wisdom of actor Ryan Gosling (his looks have nothing to do with it). And of course, we're firm supporters of feminism.
So imagine our delight when we chanced across a Tumblr blog dedicated entirely to Feminist Ryan Gosling.
Launched last weekend, it has already become a viral phenomenon and features images of the Blue Valentine actor randomly coupled with feminist theory quotes. Each caption starts with Gosling's fabled "Hey Girl" epithet.
The blog is the brainchild of writer Danielle Henderson and describes itself as "Feminist theory flashcards from your favorite sensitive movie dude-turned-meme."
Feminist nuggets of wisdom attributed to the Hollywood star include slogans such as "Hey girl - Start a revolution. Stop hating your body" and "Hey girl ... I mean WOMAN."
One of Stylist's favourites (above, second right), show Gosling's chest with the caption, "Hey girl - My eyes are up here."
The writer does go as far to admit that, "I have no idea if Ryan Gosling is actually a feminist, and don’t make any assumptions here of that sort."
However, Gosling did hint he was sympathetic to the cause when a row broke out over Blue Valentine's NC-17 rating in 2010 - having objected to the fact that it was based on a scene where he gave oral sex to Michelle Williams' character.
"You have to question a cinematic culture ... which tries to control how women are depicted on screen," he said. "It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film."
If you like where that came from, you'll definitely like the blog. Read, watch and enjoy.
