Eva Longoria has welcomed her first child with her husband, José ‘Pepe’ Bastón – and the couple have chosen a baby name which is loaded with meaning.
It’s official: Eva Longoria gave birth to a son on Tuesday 19 June.
“We are so grateful for this beautiful blessing,” she told Hola! USA magazine, confirming that she and her husband, José Baston, have named their son Santiago Enrique.
Longoria had always said that she planned to give her baby a ‘traditional’ name that followed the traditions of her and her husband’s Mexican heritage.
“We are Mexican, so we’re very traditional… it’ll be a long name.”
And the actress has certainly made good on her promise, choosing a name with Spanish-Latin roots: indeed, Santiago means Saint James, which is loaded with spiritual meaning, considering this is the patron saint of the Spanish.
Enrique, as well as being the middle name of Longoria’s father, is the Spanish variation of the name Henry. As such, it means “estate ruler”.
This boy, my son, will be surrounded by very strong, educated, powerful women
Longoria previously said that she cannot wait to get to work on teaching her son the importance of applauding and honouring feminism.
Taking to Instagram, the Desperate Housewives star wrote: “We have this wonderful wave of future feminists coming into this world with a different view of what this global community we live in should look like.
“I’m so excited that I’m having a boy because I think the world needs more good men. This boy, my son, will be surrounded by very strong, educated, powerful women and I think it’s important that he sees those types of role models in his life so he knows how to support it, how to applaud it and how to honour it.”
She added: “This #WomensDay I’d like to thank the future generations of women (and men!) who will pick up the baton and carry on the fight for gender equality.”
Longoria, in a recent interview with People Chica, has said that she felt empowered being pregnant – and, as such, kept working right up until her due date.
The actress – who shares credits with Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez in the upcoming comedy Overboard (due out in April) – explained: “Having my life now with my son and living it with him is great.
“When I’m directing, he is with me; at the Golden Globes, he is with me. [It] makes me very happy… [and] my husband is amazed that I’ll keep working probably until the last days [of pregnancy].”
However, while this is the actress’ first biological child, Longoria has made the very valid point that she is already a stepmother to José’s children Natalia, 21, and 13-year-old twins Mariana and Jose.
“I am a stepmom to three amazing kids, and I’ve had my hands full, and they are amazing and wonderful,” she said.
“It’s been a lot of fun, a lot of fun being a stepmom.”
