The 2017 Oscars was memorable for many reasons, not least of all for that awkward moment La La Land was awarded this year’s Best Picture gong – despite the fact that Moonlight was the real winner.
Halfway through the acceptance speech, Warren Beatty, who had presented the award to La La Land alongside Faye Dunaway, cut them off, revealing that he had been given the wrong envelope.
Instead of the Best Picture result, he had been handed the Best Actress in a Leading Role envelope which, of course, listed Emma Stone for La La Land.

However Stone has since commented on the epic live TV gaffe. And, judging by her comments, she’s not convinced by Beatty’s excuse.
Speaking backstage, the 28-year-old told reporters: “I was holding my Best Actress in a Leading Role card that entire time.
“So I don't mean to start stuff, but whatever story that was, I had that card. So I'm not sure what happened and I really wanted to talk to you guys first.”
Despite the mishap, Stone was quick to congratulate Moonlight for their somewhat overshadowed feat.
Praising the film, she said: "I f***ing love Moonlight. God, I love Moonlight so much. I'm so excited for Moonlight.
“Of course you know it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land, I think we would have all loved to have won Best Picture, but we are so excited for Moonlight, I think it's one of the best films of all time so I was pretty beside myself.”
“I think everyone's in a state of confusion still, excitement but confusion,” she added.
Despite Stone’s comments, there is photographic evidence of Beatty holding the wrong envelope in his hands.
Meanwhile Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlight, has insisted: “Oh my goodness, I have to say it is true, it’s not fake.”
Beatty, similarly, added that the moment had been a true mishap.
“I wasn’t trying to be funny,” he said. “That’s why I looked at Faye for a really long time.”
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, which has overseen the Academy's ballot-counting process for the past 83 years, have since released an official statement on the mix-up.
They said: "We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.
"The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."
