Actress Emma Stone challenged boyfriend and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-star Andrew Garfield when he made a sexist generalisation by saying sewing is a "feminine" thing to do at a recent Spider-Man fan screening of their new film.

During a Q&A hosted by Yahoo, a little boy asked Garfield about how Spider-Man got his costume. Garfield, aged 30, replied, "He made it. He made it with his bare hands. He sewed it. He took some sewing classes and some needlepoint classes. It's kind of a feminine thing to do. He made a very masculine costume out of a very feminine—"

Stone responded, "It's feminine how?" The crowd laughed and co-star Jamie Foxx, who was also on the Q&A panel, let out an "Oooooo".

"It's amazing how you took that as an insult," said Garfield.

"No, I'm not taking that as an insult," said Stone, "I'm asking how it's feminine".

Garfield defended his comment saying, ""It's feminine because I would say femininity is about more delicacy and precision and detail work and craftsmanship. Like my mother, she's an amazing craftsman. She in fact made my first Spider-Man costume when I was three, so I use it as a compliment."

In a recent interview with Stylist, Stone, aged 25, said, "I am so grateful to be a woman. I am so glad I am a woman. I think this is a wonderful time for women. I think the tide is turning and there are so many brave, authentic, strong and funny and vulnerable and exciting women in every industry right now.

"And Hillary Clinton is going to run for President," she continued, "So we may well have a female President in America soon. So things are happening. I just read a great interview with Gloria Steinem about equal pay for women and all the things that are coming to the forefront, and it’s an exciting and important time to be a woman, and to take pride in our gender."
