Edith Piaf, the legendary French singer considered to be one of France's greatest icons of the 20th century, died 50 years ago today (10 October 1963).

She made her mark on the world through her gutsy unique voice and poignant ballads, which captured the spirit of post-war France. Having worked her way from the music halls of Paris to Carnegie Hall in New York, Piaf reached international stardom.

Her classic song La Vie En Rose was incorporated into the Grammy Hall of Fame which honours lasting and significant songs, despite originally being nominated and failing to win a Grammy in 1963.

Aged 47, she died of liver cancer, having suffered from alcohol addiction, and on the day of her funeral thousands followed her coffin through the streets of Paris.

From 2007's Oscar winning film La Vie en Rose to inspiring today's artists such as Lady Gaga, Edith Piaf has stood the test of time and is one of Stylist's 50 female music pioneers.

Written by Piaf herself, the song is one of her most-loved songs, first released in 1946 and never forgotten since.

2. Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

Translating to "No, I regret nothing", the song was recorded by Piaf in 1960, after she had declared her intent to retire. It has featured in countless adverts and films.

3. Hymne a L'Amour

Piaf wrote the lyrics to this song about the love of her life, boxer Marcel Cerdan, around the time he died in a plane crash in October of 1949.

4. Padam Padam

Often referred to as a metaphor for Paris or a lover's heartbeat, this is one of Piaf's more upbeat numbers.

5. Milord

This dark song tells the tale of a prostitute in love with an upper-class gentleman who she sees on the street.
