In case you missed it, Disney is bringing Mary Poppins back to our screens.
In the original film, Mary – played to perfection by Julie Andrews – sailed gracefully onto the silver screen by means of a flying umbrella. And, just as soon as her feet hit the ground, she set to work on helping young Jane and Michael Banks to reconnect with their parents.
Now, over 50 years later, the magical nanny is set to make a comeback in the aptly-titled Mary Poppins Returns, with none other than Emily Blunt reprising the iconic role.
Disney have released their first official photograph of Blunt all dressed up in Poppins’ gear – and while she has a brand-new look, there’s something overwhelmingly familiar about that chic period costume.
Check it out:
From the peacock blue gloves to that brightly-coloured carpet bag, Blunt’s costume goes down as well as a spoonful of sugar.
And, if you’re amongst the original film’s eagle-eyed fans, you’ll no doubt have noticed that there’s a teeny-weeny faux robin pinned to Mary’s hat – undoubtedly a reference to the iconic lyric, “a robin feathering his nest has very little time to rest…”
All together now? “While gathering his bits of twine and twig!”
Blunt will be joined by Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is set to play Jack, a lamplighter – and photos of the duo have already leaked online.
However, while things look suitably hunk-dory in the images, Blunt has explained that fans of the original film may get a shock when they head to cinemas to watch the much-anticipated sequel.
“We’re delving into the books a lot more,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly, “which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much…
“She’s a little meaner.”
And that’s putting it lightly; in P. L. Travers’ novel, Poppins is stern, vain, cross, and often frightening. She constantly snaps at the children, threatens them, and, while she often uses her magic to create wonder, she mainly employs it as an unusual form of discipline over the Banks children.
Such as, for example, by trapping them inside a china bowl.
Mary Poppins Returns is set 20 years after the events of the first film, in the depths of Depression-era London.
The story will follow that of an adult Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, as they struggle to come to terms with a recent tragedy (which will reportedly revolve around a death in the family).
Can the arrival of their seemingly ageless nanny, Mary Poppins, help them to overcome their grief?
As well as Blunt and Miranda, the cast will include Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury.
Mary Poppins Returns will hit cinemas on December 25 2018 in the US, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.
