David Beckham: how Victoria and I survived the “tough times” in our marriage

Victoria Beckham is a celebrated fashion designer, iconic businesswoman, and former Spice Girl. Her husband, David, is a footballing legend. But, while they may be famous for their separate career achievements, there’s no denying that ‘Posh ‘n’ Becks’ are just as well-known for their 19-year marriage, too.

Now, during a special 75th anniversary edition of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, 41-year-old Beckham has opened up about his relationship with his wife.

“Of course you make mistakes over the years,” he told presenter Kirsty Young. “And we all know marriage is difficult at times… [but] it’s about working through it.

“We have come up against tough times. But we know each other better than anyone else knows us. And we talk.”

Hitting back at all those who have accused the couple of staying together for the sake of their brand, Beckham continued: “Do we stay together because it is a brand? Of course not.

“We stay together because we love each other and because we have four amazing children… we are a strong family unit. We have got strong parents, too, and they taught us the right values.”

Beckham, who selected Sir Elton John’s Something About The Way You Look Tonight as one of the tracks he would take as an island castaway, went on to reveal that he and Victoria (now 42) were forced to meet in car parks when they first began dating.

The Spice Girls’ manager, Simon Fuller, wanted the relationship kept quiet – and, as Becks was still in lodgings, they used to hang out in his BMW around the back of a Harvester pub.

“We used to kiss, of course,” he said. “[But really it was] just to spend time together.”

Beckham also let slip that he and Victoria recently renewed their wedding vows in a private ceremony at their house.

The couple first married in a lavish ceremony in Ireland in 1999, complete with matching crowns, thrones, and a purple suit which the football star has since come to regret.

“I even had a top hat in purple,” he said. “What was I thinking?”

The vow renewal “was a lot more private,” he said. “There was about six people there in our house.”

The Beckhams, who met at a Manchester United game in 1997, have four children together - Brooklyn, 17, Romeo, 14, Cruz, eleven and five-year-old Harper.

Victoria previously penned a letter to her younger self, and referenced the first time she met her husband as she wrote: “Yes, love at first sight does exist. It will happen to you in the Manchester United players’ lounge – although you will get a little drunk, so exact details are hazy.”

She continued: “While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. He’s not even in the first team at this stage - you are the famous one. And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He’s going to ask for your number.

The fashion designer added: “He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.”
