Fifty Shades of Grey star, Dakota Johnson, has expressed her contempt for Hollywood’s ageism.
Making the comments in the February issue of British Vogue, the 26-year-old referred to her mother, Working Girl star, Melanie Griffith, and her grandmother, Alfred Hitchcock muse, Tippi Hedren.
“Why isn’t my mother in movies?” Asks Johnson. “She’s an extraordinary actress! Why isn’t my grandmother in movies?
“This industry is fucking brutal.”
Johnson, who is photographed by Alasdair McLellan on the cover of the issue, revealed that Hollywood’s obsession with youth fosters the feeling that her career has a time limit.
“No matter how tough you are, sometimes there’s the feeling of not being wanted. It’s absurd and cut-throat. Whenever I have downtime, I’m unsure that I will ever work again.”
Johnson, who stars in the film adaptation of EL James’ best-selling erotic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, alongside Jamie Dornan, says that, despite the less-than-glowing reviews the film received, she remains incredibly proud of her role in it.
“I’m proud of Fifty Shades of Grey,” she says. “I don’t need to distance myself from that.
“The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do. Do I think it opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name.”
At the Oscars in February, Griffith and Johnson took part in a painfully awkward interview, in which Griffith revealed her lack of desire to watch her daughter’s role in Fifty Shades.
Johnson is currently promoting her new film, Black Mass, which tells the story of infamous Boston criminal and FBI informant, Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) whose wife Johnson plays.
Speaking of the film, in which Johnson and Depp are heavily made-up to look older, Johnson says:
“In my real life, I don’t look pretty all the time. Nobody does. I love films that are honest…that’s the thing that turns me on.”
Perhaps Christian Grey should take note…
