Girls, they want equal funds... Watch Cyndi Lauper nail a new version of the eighties anthem (and it's even more feminist)

Girls just wanna have fun. And more money. Well, at least as much money as the boys would be nice.

Cyndi Lauper, singer of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (if that needs explaining), tweaked the eighties anthem to refer to the gender pay gap while appearing on The Late, Late Show with James Corden, and it’s pretty damned spot on.

In the clip, which you can watch below, the star sings, “I come home in the morning light / My mother says, ‘Why don't you make the same as a guy?’/ Oh Mama dear, we're not the fortunate ones / 'Cause girls, they want equal funds”.

Corden, in a fetching pink wig, joins in with, “Guys if she’s mad, it’s not PMS / It’s ‘cause you do the same job but she’s making less / Don’t need no Midol, just need more income / ‘Cause girls, they want equal funds”.

Before he adds, “That and a sweater ‘cause the office is cold”. Which is fair enough, because air conditioning is sexist and we all know that by now.

The song also refers to women in films having to run in high heels, and hands out a little dating advice: “Boys be ready to pay, we’ll get the cheque when we make the same”.

The singer has often spoken about the feminist tone of the original track, telling The Atlantic in 2014, “It doesn’t mean that girls just want to fuck. It just means that girls want to have the same damn experience that any man could have.”

Cyndi, we love you even more.
