The hearts of Star Wars fans broke all over the world when, on 28 December, it was revealed that the bright and vivacious Carrie Fisher had sadly passed away at the age of 60. Just one day later, Fisher’s mother, Debbie Reynolds – a celebrated Hollywood icon – was rushed to hospital with a suspected stroke. There was nothing doctors could do to save her, and her death was confirmed a few hours later.

Her son, Todd Fisher, revealed that, in Reynolds’ last words, she had said that she wanted to be with Carrie.

The bond between mother and daughter is, without a doubt, one of the strongest there is; scientists have even found evidence that reveals women are more likely to understand and relate to the emotions of their mothers more than anyone else – and vice versa.

It should be unsurprising, then, that Reynolds and Fisher’s relationship was, perhaps, the most important in each of their lives. In fact, before they passed away, the dynamic duo had been working on a documentary, titled Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.

The show, which focused on their day-to-day lives together, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year year to critical acclaim.

Now, finally, a trailer has been released. And it’s every bit as bittersweet as you would expect.

“Mother and I live next door to each other,” announces Fisher, as the trailer opens. She then proceeds to walk into Reynolds’ house, teasing her mother for her old-fashioned mobile phone, and sitting down next to her for a chat about her role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What follows is two minutes of archival footage, home movies, and beautiful confessions of love from both mother and daughter.

There’s no denying that the trailer has proven emotional; we witness Fisher worrying about her mother’s health, and Reynolds’ hatred of growing older.

“My mother will forget she’s not 35,” explains Fisher at one point. “Age is horrible for all of us, but she falls from a greater height.”

Fisher also touches upon her diagnosis as a manic depressive, explaining that, for so long, doctors were unable to understand what she was going through.

“I went too fast, I was too much – I couldn’t handle it,” she says.

However it is the last few lines that sum up what Fisher and Reynolds truly meant to one another.

As Fisher puts it: “I’m my mum’s best friend. Far more than I ever would want to, I know what my mother feels and wants.”

She pauses, before smiling and adding wryly: “There’s a lot of it.”

Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds is due to premiere on HBO on 8 January. It is expected to be shown on British televisions in March 2017.
