Billie Piper has issued a brilliant response to her “most controversial career move so far” after fans reacted to her character throwing a pizza onto the floor in BBC drama Collateral.
From The Replacement to In The Dark, the BBC is fast becoming our one-stop shop for binge-worthy dramas with strong and complex female leads – and now they’re adding Collateral to the mix, too.
Starring Billie Piper and Carey Mulligan – aka two of the absolute best and most beloved British actors of our time – the “gripping, high-octane thriller” begins with a pizza delivery (as most good evenings do).
Instead of ending in a slab of cheesy goodness, though, the evening finishes with the shock assassination of pizza delivery driver, Abdullah.
Who shot him? Why? Was he mistaken for someone else? Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie (Mulligan) is keen to find answers, but, as she begins delving through the evidence, Glaspie quickly realises that the fatal shooting was not a random act of violence.
Naturally, viewers took to Twitter in their droves to have their say on the police drama – but all they could seemingly focus on was the fact that Piper’s character, Karen, had angrily thrown a fresh pizza onto the floor.
One fan said: “Why would she throw pizza on the floor like that… what’s the pizza done to you?”
Another commented: “An hour after it happened, I’m still dwelling on why she threw the pizza on the floor?”
And still one more wrote: “Very much enjoyed this although I’m still really confused as to why Billie Piper threw the pizza on the floor.”
Now, Piper has waded into the debate herself.
Replying to a fan on Twitter, the actress joked: “Herein lies my most controversial career move so far… #Collateral.”
She later reassured fans she would “never again” toss a pizza to the floor.
Tweeting a gif of the moment in question, Piper wrote: “OK guys, I’m hearing you loud and clear… never again! #Collateral.”
Collateral is on BBC Two, Monday at 9pm
