Sisterhood is a theme that plays out both on and off-screen in the new season of HBO’s Big Little Lies
Anyone who fell in love with Liane Moriarty’s book Big Little Lies will know its zest came from a rock-solid depiction of female friendship.
So it’s great to see this theme play out not only in the TV version, but also among its high-profile cast members.
Appearing at a press conference to promote season two of the show this weekend, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and other stars of the programme revealed some golden nuggets of the bond they share off-screen.
“Who pays? I pay,” Witherspoon quipped, when asked about the cast’s nights out together. “None of these girls ever pull out their credit card!”
When Kidman interrupted “That’s not true!”, she added, “OK, Meryl [Streep] paid once.”
Witherspoon also posted a photo of the Big Little Lies gang posing together on Instagram, branding them her “happy hour crew”.
The other actors also shared effusive photos of the event to publicise the latest instalment of the hit HBO show, airing in June.
“My friends are, like, really cool,” Zoë Kravitz wrote on her Instagram, while Laura Dern added, “the band’s back together!”
Kidman drew attention to the latest addition to the show, “the incomparable Meryl Streep”, who joins in season two as the mother-in-law to Kidman’s character, Celeste.
Apparently, off-shoot, Streep is chief storyteller in this impressive squad of friends - “Meryl tells incredible stories,” Witherspoon revealed - but Streep would only say, “What happens in Monterey stays in Monterey.”
For anyone in need of a refresher, season one of Big Little Lies ended with of the dramatic cliffhanger of Perry’s death.
Bonnie (Kravitz) pushed him down a fleet of stairs, after seeing him hit Celeste (Kidman), the wife he had physically abused for years. Just moment before, the entire group of mum friends also realised that Perry was Jane’s (Shailene Woodley) rapist.
Season two deals with the aftermath of Perry’s untimely death, in a murky world of secrets, lies and friendships; and with input from Moriaty, as the original book’s author.
Roll on June, we say. In the meantime you can sate your appetite with all that we know from season 2 here, as well as a few new photos teased by cast members, below.
