Best Halloween costumes: 21 of the best celebrity fancy dress outfits of all time

It’s the time of year when celebrities shed the shackles of red carpet glamour and - if you’re Katy Perry - dress up as a giant Cheeto.

Whether inspiration comes from a cheesy orange snack or from your friend’s wardrobe, such as Kim Kardashian’s homage to her pal Anna Wintour, the best Halloween fancy dress costumes are original, surprising and take a fair amount of effort.

These are our favourite celebrity Halloween costumes of all time…

Kim Kardashian as Anna Wintour

Kim’s Halloween costumes could fill a gallery by themselves, but her kookiest and most original offering has to be last year’s homage to her fashion pal, Anna Wintour.

The wig, shades and signature tweed were spot on and enlisting ‘extras’ for the tableau absolutely killed it. Make-up artist Joyce Bonelli is Grace Coddington, Joyce's son is dressed as a mini Karl Lagerfeld, while North West is a tribute to André Talley.

Beyonce as Storm from X-Men

That hair. Those contacts. The Blue Steel.

Beyonce spares nothing for Ciara’s early Halloween birthday party this month.

Katy Perry as a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto

Some snacks are so good they deserve to eat you, or so Katy seems to think.

She showed her strong commitment to the spicy variety at Kate Hudson’s Halloween bash last year.

Heidi Klum as an elderly woman

As Hollywood’s foremost Halloween enthusiast, Heidi is responsible for many a breathtaking costume - but none have been quite as gasp-inducing as this 2013 transformation.

Through state-of-the-art prosthetics, the model gave us an eerily realistic glimpse of her future self, many, many years down the line.

Holly Willoughby’s zip-off face

The clean-cut This Morning host swapped her blonde locks and floral dresses for an amazingly gruesome look at Jonathan Ross’ Halloween bash last year.

Iggy Azalea as Cruella De Vil

Bringing the fictional children's storybook villain to life in a chic and convincing costume last year, the Fancy singer put in ultimate effort by posing with a real (and reassuringly unafraid) Dalmatian.

Adele as La Santa Muerte

At Jonathan Ross’ annual Halloween fancy dress bash last year, the singer hadn’t yet made her big comeback and was still a little media-shy. She gave us just a glimpse of her intricate face paint as Mexico's folk saint of death - which only made the effect more spooky.

Rihanna as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

Truly a hero in a half shell in this Raphael costume on a Halloween night out in New York last year.

Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne as Mario and Luigi

A retro gaming reference that always goes down well, last year the supermodel BFFs ditched sexy catwalk duds to bring the ‘90s pixelated plumbers to life.

Taylor Swift as a Pegacorn

In a fancy dress costume so kooky it could belong to Zooey Deschanel, the singer told her Instagram followers last year, “Cause, darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a PEGACORN!”

Chloe Sevigny as Morrissey’s Joan of Arc

There’s nothing like a niche reference to make a costume ahhh-worthy and the actress did just that back in 2007 with her Bigmouth Strikes Again reference.

Chloe couldn’t get hold of the Walkman mentioned in Mozza's lyrics and made do with a Panasonic personal stereo, which despite her efforts didn't go down well with some of the singer's more die-hard fans.

Demi Moore as Gomez Addams

Back in 1997 the actress went retro handsome for Halloween as the head of the Addams family, complete with pencil-thin moustache cravat, pinstripe suit and jaw-aching cigar.

Alexa Chung as a retro space warrior

A Halloween costume aficionado, the fashion icon has already given us headless Marie Antoinette and the Burger Burglar and last year she was unrecognisable as a green-haired, silver-skinned, gun-slinging space warrior.

Brooke Shields

The actress left vampy Morticia to her daughters in 2011 and took on the more challenging role of Uncle Fester.

Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber as Slash and Axel Rose

Couple’s costuming is always fun, especially when it’s such a departure from the pair’s normal look. Cindy and Rande nailed it in 2013.

Anne Hathaway as Cleopatra

Angelina Jolie, eat your heart out. Back in 2004, the Oscar-winning Les Miserables star donned a long black wig and very big eyelashes to bring us a Disney-esque version of the milk-bathing queen.

Miranda Kerr as Marilyn Monroe

It's not only us mere mortals who enjoy dressing as dead celebrities at this time of year. This week Miranda went for an iconic Marilyn moment in platinum wig and white dress for an early Halloween bash.

Jemima Khan in a cage with a gigantic gorilla

The journalist and campaigner didn’t have to change her hair, make-up or outfit to take the prize for most original costume at her annual UNICEF Halloween Ball last year.

Nick Grimshaw and Kate Moss as Rita Ora and Cara Delevingne

If imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery, Rita and Cara should feel pretty pleased with this pair’s handiwork at Wossy's’ star-studded party last year.

Michelle Trachtenberg as Tim Burton's Blue Girl with Wine

Anything involving full body paint usually gets our vote. The Buffy star went all out in 2011 to evoke the famous filmmaker’s quirky artwork.

Kelly Osbourne as Margot Tenenbaum

The presenter is an uncanny replica of Gwyneth Paltrow’s character in 2001 cult film The Royal Tenenbaums at a Halloween party last year.
