When news of an all-female Ghostbusters reboot reached fans of the original movies, there was a vocal online backlash. Its first trailer ranked as the most disliked in history, after receiving more than 600,000 thumbs-down votes on YouTube.

Now Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Sandra Bullock have joined forces for an all-female remake of Ocean’s Eleven – and, boringly, there have already been grumblings from misogynistic movie goers on social media.

Speaking about a potential backlash, Hathaway told Time magazine: “When I’m a second or a third lead in a film – usually the first and second leads are men – my character doesn’t feel political.

“But when I’m number one on the call sheet, it suddenly becomes a ‘woman’s story’ and it’s a statement.

“That’s the moment we’re in.”

Hathaway added: “In this movie, there are eight women starring, so it may well attract that sort of attention.

“But good luck to any person who tries to take on Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, because you’re not going to win.”

Hathaway went on to praise her co-stars for making the Ocean’s Eight set such an inspiring and empowered place to work – and for allowing her to bring her 11-month-old son, Jonathan, to the set with her.

“I only have one experience (of resources available to mums in Hollywood) so far, and it’s a movie that stars eight women, four of whom are mothers – which is definitely not the norm,” Anne told Motto magazine.

“On Ocean’s Eight, kids were welcome on the set. (Before we started) I got an email from Sandra Bullock saying, ‘Hey, listen, we’re going to make this a really welcoming place for kids. I know you’re a brand-new mom, so don’t be afraid to bring your son. We love kids here.’ Change is going to come, but it’s going to take people like her with the power to make change to demand it.”

Hathaway isn’t the only Ocean’s Eight star who’s been piling praise on her colleagues; Paulson was recently asked whether she was worried about “feuding” with her female co-stars.

Unimpressed by what was clearly a very dumb question, she told The Wrap: “I’ve never had anything like that happen on that set.

“I don’t come from a world where I expect that […] I just think it’s sort of sad, really, that that would be the expectation.”

She continued: “I promise you it would not be like that if a bunch of boys would get together – ‘bro fights.’ I hate to support that narrative or that idea and it certainly couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Paulson finished by praising her co-stars, adding: “These women that [Ocean’s 8 director] Gary Ross has gathered together are some of the great women of the world and some of the greatest actors.

“Everyone is getting along like gangbusters, I can promise you that.”
