Anna Faris on why the social media reaction to her divorce made her “angry”

When they filed for divorce in 2017, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt unwittingly triggered a social media storm – and the Mom actress has now spoken out about how the attention made her feel

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris were, for a very long time, one of the internet’s favourite couples. Over their eight-year marriage, they shared selfies, and videos, and fun anecdotes about one another with their online fans – and, last year, Pratt stood up to give a heartfelt speech about the woman who gave him “the greatest star in the galaxy”.

So, when they announced their separation on 6 August 2017, many were shocked – and it wasn’t long before the news was trending worldwide on Twitter, with phrases like “love is dead” and “that’s it, I don’t want to live on this planet anymore” flying around the social media stratosphere.

Now, in a revealing new interview, Faris has admitted that the over-the-top reaction from her fans very quickly got on her nerves.

“I had a little bit of a childish feeling like, ‘Oh, come on, f***ing grow up,’” she said during her recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard.

“Like, a little anger.”

However, Faris went on to say that she felt as if she were partly to blame for the online reaction, having consciously “cultivated” the perception that she and Pratt had the “perfect” marriage.

“I do think, we obviously cultivated something [the idea of a perfect relationship], and it was rewarding for a while, like, ‘Oh, people seem to think that we got all this s**t sorted, that’s nice!’”

She added: “Chris and I did talk about, like, ‘Oh boy … [we’re letting fans down]’, and we got on the Twitter feed, ‘Love is dead’ and ‘relationship goals…’”

Pratt and Faris first met in 2007 on the set of their film, Take Me Home Tonight. Two years later, they were married, and their beloved son Jack was born in 2012.

Over the last few years, Pratt has become a huge Hollywood star, thanks to his turns in Guardians of the Galaxy, The LEGO Movie, Jurassic World and Passengers. And Faris, speaking openly in her podcast, Anna Faris is Unqualified, has said that her husband’s sudden fame had put a strain on their marriage, despite many fans holding them up as the idea #relationshipgoals.

“We grapple with the idea of being a public couple,” she said last December. “There were some tabloid rumours about strain on our relationship.

“I just remember feeling so hurt in a way that bothered me because I didn’t want to think of myself as somebody that could be affected by tabloid s**t. There was a picture of me walking alone on the beach: ‘Ageing Anna Faris, Alone on the Beach.’”

Faris continued: “I take pride in how great my relationship is with Chris, but having said that, of course, in this crazy world where he’s off doing movies and I’m in LA raising our child, of course I’m going to feel vulnerable, like any normal human would…

“And it did make me feel like, ‘Is public perception – even though it’s false – is there a grain of something?’

“It made me feel incredibly insecure.”

However, while Faris and Pratt are no longer a couple, they are still very much good friends (which she adds is absolutely not the case with her first husband, Ben Indra).

She told Shepard: “We had an unbelievable marriage, and we have a great friendship now, we love our son to death, and I’m really proud of that, because I’m not sure I did that well the first time.

“[But] I need to figure out what the purpose [of marriage] is. Is it safety for your children? Is it convention? Is it so other people respect your relationship more? For me, I’m just not quite sure where it fits.”
