Throughout her legal career Amal Clooney has supported the work of women.

She has clerked for trailblazing legal minds, including Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and represented women imprisoned by their countries for speaking out about gender inequality. One of her most high profile clients is Nadia Murad, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning woman who continues to speak out about the rape and sex trafficking of Yazidi women by members of Islamic State.

So it should be no surprise that her latest move is one that further spotlights inspiring women. Clooney will join with The Prince’s Trust International to bestow the Amal Clooney Award to young women who have “succeeded against the odds to make a lasting difference in their communities.” The Prince’s Trust, which is led by Prince Charles, will give the human rights lawyer full dominion over selecting the winner, who will be awarded their prize by Clooney at a ceremony in 2020.

“It is a privilege to be able to play a part in a project that will draw attention to incredible young women who are the future leaders of our world,” Clooney said in a statement. 

The best thing about the award is that it will recognise the work of young women at various different ages. Anyone between 11 and 30 can enter, even if they have previously been spotlighted or awarded by The Prince’s Trust. Some examples of the kind of projects that Clooney will be looking for include sustainable farming schemes, community organisations in refugee camps and war zone rebuilding schemes.

As The Prince’s Trust puts it: “the award will shine a light on the unsung heroes who are the driving force behind initiatives that are helping their communities to thrive.”

Dame Martina Milburn, the Chief Executive of The Prince’s Trust, said: “we are delighted to be working with Amal to shine a light on their passion and celebrate unsung female heroes everywhere. There is so much we can achieve together to help young people, and their communities, all over the world.” 

Prince Charles isn’t the only member of the Royal Family who is close with the Clooneys. George and Amal were guests of honour at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. The couples became friends early into Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship – it was Amal who gave Meghan local tips and recommendations when she first moved to London, and Amal was one of the guests at Meghan’s baby shower in New York.

Recently, George has taken to publicly defending Meghan from the tabloid media. Speaking at a press conference for his new television series Catch-22, George said: “She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself. And we’ve seen how that ends.”

Later, George added that he deems the media treatment of Meghan “a little unfair at times… I’ve seen it when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since [Meghan] hasn’t done anything except just happen to live her life.”

Don’t we all wish we had the Clooneys in our corner?
