Hear the words “Mariah Carey” and “film” in a sentence together, and your mind might go straight to Glitter, the jaw-droppingly terrible 2001 rom-com in which our beloved Mimi plays a nightclub dancer trying to make it as a singer. (Spoiler: the music business is hard, you guys.)
But all of that is about to change – because a new Mariah-based movie is on its way, and it looks set to knock Glitter out of the park.
A CGI animated picture based on Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You is in the works at Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Production has already begun on the new film, which is inspired by Carey’s ultimate festive anthem and features narration by the 46/47-year-old singer (no one’s entirely sure exactly how old Carey is, which is just so Mariah).
The voice cast also includes Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls’ Gretchen Wieners!) and Henry Winkler (best known as The Fonz in Happy Days).
Australian child actress Breanna Yde will play a young Mariah in the movie, which sounds like it will rival Inception in terms of plot complexity. In a nutshell, Child Mariah sees a puppy named Princess at a pet shop (again, so Mariah), and proclaims that all she wants for Christmas is… that puppy.
Before they’ll buy her the dog of her dreams, however, Mariah’s parents make her pet-sit a “scraggly rascal of a dog” named Jack, who promptly sends the family’s Christmas preparations into chaos.
The film is based on Carey’s 2015 children’s book, also called All I Want for Christmas is You, which has sold over 750,000 copies.
“I am thrilled to be able to bring the story of the song to new generations of families,” said Carey in a statement.
She also posted a video on Twitter, which manages to give away very little about the actual movie while capturing the song’s general sparkliness:
The film is slated for release this Christmas.
