Alicia Silverstone's alternative guide to parenting

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone has just released a new book on her alternative parenting methods.

In The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning (try saying that more than once), Silverstone offers advice on parenting and tips on how to keep you and your child healthy.

Silverstone,37, has a three-year-old son and is known for her rather alternative methods of parents, such as chewing up food in her mouth and feeding it to her child (see below image), and this work is very much in that school of thought.

In her new book, she suggests that parents don't put nappies on their children and let them roam around free, and says that babies are “much more content leaving their business in the grass than having to sleep and eat accompanied by their own pee and poo.”

The celebrity is also an advocate of allowing her children to sleep in a bed with her and says that any parent who doesn't allow it is advocating neglect. On the matter, she said: "sharing a bed with baby means you can tune in better to her needs, which in turn builds security and trust."

She also has some interesting thoughts on tampons: "Unfortunately, feminine-care manufacturers aren't required to tell you what's in their products, which means that no one's talking about the potential pesticide residues from non-organic cotton and the 'fragrances' containing hormone-upsetting, fertility-knocking phthalates."

This is similar to her thoughts on nutrition, as she believes that meat, dairy, and processed foods track ‘toxic sludge’ through your "baby house" (her words, not ours).

In another excerpt, Silverstone says that women can avoid post-natal depression by ensuring they eat the right sort of foods: "If you want to prevent crippling postpartum depression, just avoid eating certain foods, including processed sugars, “which makes us feel unbalanced.”

She also wades in on the vaccination debate: "While there has not been a conclusive study of the negative effects of such a rigorous one-size-fits-all, shoot-’em-up schedule, there is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was ‘never the same’ after receiving a vaccine. And I personally have friends whose babies were drastically affected in this way.”

Although we have no problem with her sharing her thoughts on alternative methods on parenting, offering medical advice without proper research (and the small fact of her not being a doctor), is a little misjudged on her part.

Finally, if you're trying to conceive and are having no luck, she offers this nugget of advice: "Eat well, get healthy, then ditch all the planning and trying and just let it flow. There’s no better way to make a baby than with yummy, soulful sex!"

Alicia Silverstone's five most unusual parenting and health theories

1. Tampons are rotting you from the inside

2. Avoid post-natal depression by simply cutting out sugar

3. Your child's personality will be changed if you get them vaccinated

4. Let your child defecate in the grass, rather than wearing nappies

5. Allow your baby to sleep outside the family bed means you are neglecting them

What do you think of her new book? Would you read it? Or is it too much on the wild side for you?
