She’s got more important things to talk about than that baby bump…
Alanis Morrissette’s Jagged Little Pill was, without a doubt, an excellent rock album – but it was also so much more than just that. Her poetic lyrics and brutal imagery lent power to a burst of rage that felt, somehow, uniquely female – because it wasn’t about being difficult, or contrary, or simply ‘angry’. No, it was about being a woman in a misogynist society, making your voice heard, and refusing to let anyone silence you.
It’s understandable, then, that when the singer took to Instagram to confirm that she’s set to become a mother for the third time, she refused to let the news distract anyone from the fact she’s back in the studio and recording some new music.
Sharing a black and white photo of herself singing into a microphone recording music in her house, Morissette simply captioned the shot as “so much NEWness…”
It was a clear reference to both the music she was recording and the obvious baby bump that she displays in the side-on shot.
Check it out:
The impending arrival will be the third child for Alanis and husband of nearly nine years, Mario: the musical pair are already parents to eight-year-old son Ever Imre and two-year-old daughter Onyx Solace.
However, die-hard Morissette fans were almost entirely focused on the singer’s new music as opposed to… well, as opposed to her new baby.
“Can’t wait for the new album,” wrote one.
“Please include NAYSAYERS on the new album,” added another. “Such a fantastic song.”
And still one more said: “I can’t wait to see you rock the stage the end of April (with that cute belly!)”
It’s been a busy few years for Morissette. She’s currently on a US stadium tour, and May 2018 saw the Jagged Little Pill musical hit Broadway, featuring such mega-tunes as Ironic, You Oughta Know, Forgiven, Mary Jane, Head Over Feet, and All I Really Want – as well as a number of songs from Morissette’s larger discography.
The plot is a complex one (as you might expect, considering that it was penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and Morissette herself), and deals with the dynamics of a contemporary, multi-generational family as they tackle issues such as gender identity and race.
And, before you start to get jealous of our pals overseas, the show is currently touring the UK. Win.
Morissette, speaking about the musical, previously said: “The team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true.”
She is, of course, referencing to the fact that, as well as Cody, the show was brought to life by Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.
“The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honoured to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent,” continued Morissette.
“Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”
