Introducing Stylist’s very special guest editor: Adwoa Aboah

Adwoa Aboah discusses her heroes, karaoke and Clara Amfo’s cheesecake in her special 10th anniversary guest editor’s note.
A few weeks ago, on a rare sunny afternoon in London, my friend asked me to name my hero. “Can I really only choose one?” I asked.
“Only one,” they replied. How could I possibly choose a single hero? My heroes include everyone from the Spice Girls to author Matt Haig, NHS nurses, to my sisters and of course my beautiful Gurls Talk community. It would be impossible to single one out.
So I didn’t. I made this issue instead. Taking over Stylist has been a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all the things I love and I hope that anyone reading it gets as much enjoyment from it as I had making it.
Every article I commissioned for this issue reflects something – or someone – I love or am fascinated by. So I hope you are as inspired by (and envious of) the art form of drag queen make-up as modelled by Cara Melle, Herr The Queen, Meth and Tayce.
I hope you learn about sex workers’ rights in my friend Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff’s column and male mental health from my favourite author Matt Haig. And I hope my sister’s very honest review of her trip to Iceland will make you book a flight immediately.
If not that, perhaps you’ll try out Clara Amfo’s cheesecake while pre-ordering my darling Sonny Hall’s book of poetry and daydreaming about how cool period poverty campaigner Amika George is. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the round-up of ethical tees and sweatshirts that will stand out, or the karaoke bars, or the reading recommendations courtesy of Florence Welch’s book club…
What I really hope is that you feel all sorts of magical things when looking at the beautiful faces of the girls on my cover (above) and across this takeover. These are some of my gurls, these are the heroes that my community Gurls Talk is built upon. They are real. They have different personalities, different body types and are different colours. They are from different backgrounds and they love different things.
This issue is dedicated to all the beautifully different girls out there, to the countless people who inspire me and the courageous people who speak their truths, no matter the stigma or however taboo the world might deem it to be.
This issue is a homage and celebration of the sheer fact that I don’t have just one hero.
Mad love,
Adwoa Aboah

We’re celebrating Stylist’s 10th birthday in 2019 – and to honour the occasion, we’ve asked 10 of our favourite women to guest edit an issue of the magazine. Adwoa Aboah is our second star guest editor, following Brie Larson’s takeover in February.
“As the second of our 10th birthday guest editors, we’re delighted to welcome award-winning model, and founder of Gurls Talk, Adwoa Aboah to take over an issue of Stylist,” says Stylist’s editor-in-chief Lisa Smosarski.
“Over the past two months Adwoa has been in touch every day, creating, commissioning and approving every article you’re about to read. She has been so inspiring and positive to work with, and this is a true reflection of her as a person – and why she really is every inch a Stylist woman.
“We hope you enjoy everything about it. Look out for our third guest editor next month…”
