Sologamist weddings – in which people choose to ‘marry’ themselves, rather than get hitched to a partner – have seen an uptick in popularity in recent years, with women wedding themselves everywhere from Brighton and Yorkshire to New York, Canada and Kyoto.
Now, Adriana Lima has announced that she, too, is married to herself.
The 35-year-old Brazilian supermodel posted a selfie on Instagram in which she is seen flashing an enormous diamond ring on her left hand.
In the accompanying caption, Lima wrote: “WHATS UP WITH THE RING? ITS SYMBOLIC, I AM COMMITTED TO MYSELF AND MY OWN HAPPINESS I AM MARRIED WITH ME. LADIES LOVE YOURSELF AND YES I AM SINGLE [sic].”
The response to Lima’s post was generally positive, with many women commenting that they had made a similar decision themselves.
“Inspirational,” wrote one person. “We all need to love ourselves more and buy ourselves something special.”
Another wrote: “Be happy with who you are and live life defined by your own goals.”
“I did this, too,” said another Instagram user. “Bought myself a ruby. Always love yourself first!”
Lima was previously married to Serbian basketball player Marko Jaric, with whom she has two daughters, Valentina and Sienna. The couple divorced in March 2016.
