Exciting news for fans of Bridesmaids this morning, as it has been announced that Kristen Wiig is teaming up with her co-writer from the 2011 hit, Annie Mumolo, for a new film.
The new project could see Wiig step into the director’s chair for the first time, having already produced several of her hit films including Bridesmaids and Girl Most Likely.
There are few details available right now but we know that Wiig and Mumolo will play best friends who “find themselves in over their heads and out of their depth”, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
But the film will not be a sequel to Bridesmaids, despite the film taking around £172million at the box office worldwide.
Wiig told Harper’s Bazaar last year that “We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that's not my goal in my creative life.”
Instead, the new film will introduce us to a whole new group of characters. Bridesmaids was hailed as a new direction for female comedy, and there will be high expectations for its writing team’s next output.
In a statement, the pair said “We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
Bridesmaids was their first collaboration, and both Mumolo and Wiig’s first outing as film writers. It earned them BAFTA and Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay. We can’t wait to see where their next project will take them.
