Since its debut on Netflix in March, high school mystery-drama series 13 Reasons Why has attracted huge attention – as well as a considerable amount of controversy – for its portrayal of the circumstances surrounding a teenage girl’s suicide. The show has been variously praised for tackling the topics of grief and adolescent mental health and condemned for its no-holds-barred depiction of suicide and self-harm, with some schools and critics worrying that the show risks glamorising the act of taking one’s own life.

Now, the show’s executive producer Selena Gomez has confirmed that it will return for a second series – and it looks like fans might finally find out more about what really happened to Hannah Baker.

Gomez, 24, unveiled a new trailer for series two of 13 Reasons Why on Instagram on Sunday night. In the caption, she wrote: “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the show will return with 13 more hour-long episodes at some point in 2018.

While the first series of 13 Reasons Why explored the circumstances leading up to Hannah Baker’s suicide, it looks as though the second batch of episodes will focus on the fallout from her death.

According to Netflix, series two “picks up in the aftermath of [Hannah’s] death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.”

It has yet to be confirmed whether Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah, will feature in the second series. However, showrunner Brian Yorkey previously hinted that 13 Reasons Why fans haven’t seen the last of Langford.

“Hannah’s story is still very much not finished,” he said in May. “She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she’s very much still at the centre of it.”

Netflix recently tackled criticisms that 13 Reasons Why glorified damaging issues by adding warnings to the start of each episode.

Series one, meanwhile, ended with a special 30-minute episode called Beyond the Reasons, in which the cast, doctors, mental health advocates, psychologists and producers – including Gomez – offered advice to viewers about how to access mental health support or help others in need.

For her part, Gomez – who has been open about her own struggles with mental health – has spoken out about the 13 Reasons Why backlash, saying that the series honours the message of its source material (a YA novel of the same name by Jay Asher).

“We stayed very true to the book,” Gomez told the Associated Press in April, describing Asher’s story as “beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful”.

She added: “We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing.”
