Taylor Swift has decided to publicly back Kamala Harris for president at the next US election. Here’s everything you need to know.
Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris for president in the US election that will take place in November 2024.
Posting to her following of 283 million on Instagram, the record-breaking singer said she would be “casting [her] vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election”. She continued: “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
While endorsing Harris and Walz, Swift stressed to her followers that the “choice is yours to make”, encouraging them to research the candidates running for election and register to vote.
Swift chose to post a photo of herself and her cat, Benjamin Button, to accompany her words. Signing her post with “Taylor Swift, childless cat lady”, commentators speculated that she might be taking a swipe at Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, who previously suggested that women who don’t have children are “miserable” and “cat ladies”. Many celebrities called out his comments, with American actor Liz Vassey saying: “I had absolutely no idea I was miserable. Thank God there was a man around to tell me.”
Jennifer Aniston also expressed her anger at Vance’s words, saying: “I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of the United States.
“All I can say is, Mr Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her too.”
