Appearing on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast on 6 October, US vice president and 2024 presidential hopeful Kamala Harris discussed abortion rights and body autonomy and responded to criticisms levelled against her.

With less than a month until the US presidential election, Democratic hopeful and current Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on popular culture podcast Call Her Daddy to talk about abortion rights and criticise her opponent Donald Trump for being “full of lies”.

Speaking to host Alex Cooper, Harris began by discussing her plans to make Gen Z and millennial voters feel represented and not left behind. “It’s a very real issue, and we need to take it seriously,” Harris said, before laying out her plan to increase affordable housing, provide down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers and increase tax credits for America’s working people.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cooper brought up claims from former president Trump that some states were executing babies after birth. “It is not happening, and it’s a lie. It’s a bold-faced lie that he is suggesting that,” Harris responded.

“That is so outrageously inaccurate, and it’s so insulting to suggest that that would be happening and that women would be doing that. It’s not happening anywhere. This guy is full of lies – I just have to be very candid with you,” she added.

Continuing, Harris said: “When I was attorney general, I was the top law enforcement officer of the biggest state in this country and I was acutely aware that the words I spoke could be the difference between whether a corporation was in business or out of business, that the words I spoke could move markets. The idea that someone is not only so careless and irresponsible and reckless, but out and out lies to create fear and division in our country and thinks he should be president of the United States, standing behind the seal of the president of the United States, using the microphone that comes with that and using that voice and those words in such an irresponsible – and that’s mild – way. This is why this election matters.”

Later, Cooper brought up comments by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Republican governor of Arkansas, who said during a rally for Donald Trump that Kamala “doesn’t have anything keeping her humble” because she doesn’t have her own biological children.

In response, Harris called her step-children from her marriage to Doug Emhoff “a real blessing” before adding: “I feel sorry for her. I’m going to tell you why: because I don’t think she understands that there are a whole lot of women out here who, one, are not aspiring to be humble and, two, who have a lot of love in their life, family in their life and children in their life, and I think it’s very important for women to lift each other up.

“Family comes in many forms…you know, this is not the 1950s anymore. Families come in all kinds of shapes,” she added.
