The Netherlands are known for many things– clogs, windmills, tulips, those rather delicious caramel waffles – but Chocolate Wine? That’s one Dutch delicacy we hadn’t heard of.
But during a quick browse on Pinterest, we came across Chocovine, a combination of Cabernet red wine, dark Dutch chocolate and cream.
The flavour pairings clearly work when consumed together – we love ending the day with a large glass of red wine and a few slabs of dark chocolate, and both are packed with anti-oxidants, making them a rather guilt free indulgence. But combined in one drink? We’re imagining a bizarre version of Baileys.
Despite our misgivings, the tipple has taken off in America, with mentions on the Ellen Show, and over a million bottles already sold. The Chocovine Facebook page is full of devoted messages from the drinks' adoring fans, and suggestions for cocktail recipes (the Mint Patty Cocktail with ChocoVine and Creme de Menthe sounds like a dessert in a glass). Other flavours include Raspberry, Whipped Cream, and Espresso.
If chocolate and alcohol does sounds like a match made in heaven, you’re in luck. Chocovine doesn’t seem to be available in the UK yet – but you can order it from the US from wine-searcher.com for around £4 (plus postage/VAT).
What do you think of the drink? Too sickly sweet to imagine? Or a stroke of genius? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter.
