Batman, Superman, Captain America and Thor have all had their turn; this summer it’s Wonder Woman’s time, and Gal Gadot is more than ready for a superhero tour de force.
In the brand new trailer for DCU’s long-awaited Wonder Woman adaptation, we see Gadot wielding a sword with formidable mastery, hurling her lassoo and fending off bullets with just her ‘bracelets of submission’, as she prepares to save the world from ‘the war to end all wars’.
Directed by Monster’s Patty Jenkins, the film stars a badass female line-up with Robin Wright as General Antiope, Wonder Woman’s aunt, and Connie Nielsen as her mother, Queen Hippolyta.
Chris Pine, meanwhile, plays fighter pilot Steve Trevor, who crash lands on the island of the Amazonian warriors.

UN declared Wonder Woman as its new Honorary Ambassador
A move which has earned scathing criticism and widespread backlash, given that numerous ‘real life’ women have been overlooked for the critical role.
An online petition, which has so far garnered almost 29,000 signatures, notes: “It is alarming that the United Nations would consider using a character with an overtly sexualised image at a time when the headline news in United States and the world is the objectification of women and girls.”
Speaking to the BBC, one UN staff member said: “We don’t think that a fictitious comic book character wearing what basically looks like a playboy bunny outfit is really the right message we need to send to girls – or even boys for that matter – about what strong women are. We think that is a toxic message to be sending.”
With director Jenkins at the helm and a powerful female cast, it’s hoped that Wonder Woman’s newest outing will be free from the reductive hypersexualisation of the past.
Gadot’s costumes, though still on the minimal and clingy side, do suggest a shifting focus to her athleticism, warrior power and fighting prowess, while if the Comic Con trailer (below) is anything to go by, camera angles are now firmly on the fighting too.
