Women around the world are sharing powerful stories of sexual harassment on Twitter using the viral hashtag #droporeilly.
The movement kicked off last Tuesday with a tweet from the Women’s March account, asking its 474,000 followers to “use the power of [their] voice” to encourage advertisers to #droporeilly by sharing their stories of workplace harassment.
The hashtag refers to Bill O’Reilly, a Fox News TV host who was revealed by The New York Times to have reportedly paid $13 million (approximately £10.4 million) in five out-of-court settlements related to harassment claims – some of which were sexual in nature.
As a result, Fox News has come under pressure to fire O’Reilly, who presents a nightly show, The O’Reilly Factor, with nearly four million viewers.
While Fox has (so far) taken no action, and President Trump has defended O’Reilly, CNBC reported yesterday that more than 30 brands have pulled their adverts from the show, with household names including BMW, Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi declining to be associated with the presenter.
As pressure mounts for the station, and its remaining advertisers, to #droporeilly, women continue to share their stories.
“Loved my job until the day my boss cornered me and said he was too busy thinking about my body to get any work done,” one woman wrote.
“Was told I couldn't go on certain project visits because I was a woman and clients were men...’and you know how men are’,” added another.
“Mentor 15 years my senior harassed me for months. HR told me that I was clearly a willing participant, given my provocative chest size,” wrote another.
