Will & Grace might not have given us as many endlessly quotable moments as its big ’90s New York City rivals, Friends and Sex and the City, but we loved it nonetheless. Its depiction of the friendship between straight women and gay men was groundbreaking for its time, and the world was gifted a brilliant comic antiheroine in the shape of squeaky-voiced and morally corrupt socialite Karen Walker (choice quote: “You should realise that words are weapons, you little sissy!”).

Now, after much speculation, it’s been confirmed that the beloved sitcom will be joining the likes of Gilmore Girls, Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch and getting a reboot.

NBC has ordered 10 episodes of a Will & Grace revival, reuniting Emmy winners Debra Messing (Grace), Eric McCormack (Will), Sean Hayes (Jack) and Megan Mullally (Karen).

“We’re thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest and most defining comedies in NBC history is coming back,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt.

“This groundbreaking series for everything from gay rights to social and political commentary – all disguised as a high-speed train of witty pop culture – is coming back where it belongs.”

Variety reports that NBC had been in talks with the cast and creators of Will & Grace since September, when they reunited to film a one-off episode encouraging fans to vote in the presidential election.

In that ten-minute special, Will and Grace were both voting for Hillary Clinton. Karen, meanwhile, was voting for Trump – because, as she informed Jack, she saw “Trumpy” as the only candidate who could stop “wars and monsoons and locusts and hordes of brown people pouring over our borders from every direction”.

Jennifer Salke, the president of NBC Entertainment, said that the success of the reunion show spurred them on to start working on a new series.

“The fact that all four of the original stars were excited about getting back into production is a testament to the joyful experience they had doing nearly 200 episodes for eight seasons,” she said.

On Twitter, Debra Messing confirmed the news to an excited fan, while Sean Hayes hit up his former and soon-to-be co-stars for a lift to the office.

While this is the first official announcement of the Will & Grace reunion, rumours had been swirling about a possible revival for months. At the beginning of January, actor Leslie Jordan – who had a long-running supporting role in the sitcom as Karen’s pretentious love rival, Beverley Leslie – let the cat out of the bag during an interview with San Diego radio station KPBS.

“It’s back,” said Jordan during the interview. “Here’s the way it works: NBC has ordered 10 episodes. It’ll be for next season, so they’ll [film] in July.”

Debbie Reynolds, who passed away on 28 December, sadly won’t be able to reprise her role as Grace’s mother Bobbi Adler for the Will & Grace reboot. Upon hearing of Reynolds’ death, Debra Messing (Grace) described her onscreen mother as “a legend”, writing on Twitter: “So heartsick. Debbie went to be with Carrie. It’s such a devastating 1, 2 punch. She was my ‘mom’ for years & I loved her dearly.”
