BBC Two has released the first trailer for The Fall's second series and it seems the next instalment is going to be every bit as chilling as its predecessor.
The video sees Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, played by Gillian Anderson, lying on a bed, posed as one of the victims of serial killer Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan), who hovers beside her. The two sit opposite each other, seemingly within reach, suggesting Gibson's determination to find the killer is stronger than ever.
Set against the political backdrop of Belfast, The Fall follows a police investigation that uncovers intricate stories of the lives entangled by a series of murders.
Viewers were left unsatisfied at the end of series 1, (spoiler alert) when Spector fled the country and evaded arrest in the closing moments of the season.
However, the first look at the second season is building anticipation amongst fans with the caption: 'a killer within reach'.
Viewers were concerned about the future of the show when Jamie Dornan was cast as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey.
"I don’t want to play a serial killer for the rest of my life but it certainly will change people’s perceptions of who I am," said Dornan on playing Spector. "I thought I was in over my head when they cast me. It was tough – really tough – and not an easy place to have your head in for four months. I didn’t read about anything other than innocent death and it does affect you," added the star.
For Anderson, who's known for her role as Dana Scully in The X-Files star, she couldn't turn down the opportunity to play Gibson. "When this script came along… I have a tendency to assume that something's not going to be very good before I read it!," said the actress in an interview with Digital Spy. "Then I started to read it and it was just so well-written, so powerful, so psychologically stimulating and I really liked the character of Stella.
"She felt very different to other law-enforcement officials that I've played before...how he (the writer, Allan Cubitt) came up with the characters and the forensic way that he approaches his material - I thought, God, it sounds amazing - I have to do it!"
