There are still more than two months to go until its cinema release, but the latest trailer for Bridget Jones’s Baby has just arrived.
Things have never gone exactly to plan for London’s most iconic heroine, but the new film sees her contending with her biggest bombshell yet. Fortysomething and single after splitting from Mark Darcy five years earlier, Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is focusing on her friends and her career as a producer at Hard News TV channel.
The new trailer shows her friends encouraging Bridget to seek out a new lover, with her colleague at Hard News telling her: “You could always try online dating again... The other day I was on Tinder, half an hour later I’m having a three-way.”
It's at Hard News that Bridget encounters dashing American entrepreneur Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), and her old friends - including the legendary Shazza, now a mother - are fully supportive of her new relationship.
But after an encounter with Mark Darcy at a christening leads to a brief rekindling of their romance, Bridget unexpectedly finds herself pregnant. And because nothing ever goes smoothly for Bridget, she has no idea whether Jack or Mark is the father.
When Bridget tells the two men that she’s not sure which of them fathered her baby, a competition of epic proportions ensues.
“Can’t go back and keep making same mistakes,” she observes in her famous diary voiceover, “when I can make new ones.”
And it’s not just Bridget, Mark and Jack who are in the dark. Renee Zellweger revealed earlier this year that even the cast of Bridget Jones’s Baby don’t know who the daddy is. Director Sharon Maguire – who, incidentally, was the inspiration for the character of Shazza in Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones columns – made the actors film three different endings to the movie, to avoid the possibility of any spoilers leaking.
“It’s kind of brilliant,” Zellweger told the Sunday Express. “None of the cast knows who fathered Bridget’s baby or who she’ll choose as her beau. The plan is to keep us all in the dark, right up to the premiere.”
Bridget fans can fight the corner of their preferred suitor on Twitter, using the hashtags #definitelydarcy or #totallyjack.
