The nation’s best vegan eateries, from pizza in Brighton to brunch in Cardiff

From fast food to fine dining, here’s the plant-based pick of Britain’s vegan-friendly eateries…

Just a few years ago, vegan options for dining out consisted of a sad-face bean burger or limp salad. Not any more. Veganism is a global phenomenon and thanks to the boom in its popularity – in Britain the number of vegans has quadrupled in the space of a decade – there has never been a better choice of animal-free eating options.

PETA recently named London the most vegan-friendly city on the planet, and across the UK other cities are following suit with delicious ethical options. From junk food to Michelin-starred dishes, here are the best meat-free eats, whether you’re committed to cruelty-free or just want to see what the fuss is about.

Temple of Seitan, London

Fried chicken gets a vegan makeover using seitan (that’s wheat gluten, FYI) at this Hackney and Camden fast food institution. Their mouthwatering ‘chicken’ wings, BBQ ‘bacon’ burgers and spicy wraps will make you wonder why anyone still bothers with meat.

V-Revolution, Manchester

An American-style diner serving cruelty-free but taste-full junk food favourites such as grilled ‘cheese’ sandwiches and fillet to-fish (made with beer battered tofu). Try the Kevin Bacon buttermilk fried ‘chicken’ burger or the Soy Division smoked tofu sourdough sandwich and you’ll be hooked, believe us.

Purezza, Brighton

Britain’s first vegan pizzeria was founded in 2015 by Italian plant pioneers who put in years of lab work to create alternatives to traditional ingredients, including the ‘mozzarella’ made from brown rice.

By Chloe, London

This totally plant-based New York brand now has two branches in Covent Garden and London Bridge, where they serve delicious, wholesome and highly Instagrammable dishes including quinoa tacos, pesto ‘meatballs’ and pancakes with coconut cream. Worth queuing for.

Sanskruti, Liverpool

Prepare to be overwhelmed – in the best sort of way – by the enormous and colourful range of Indian dishes at this exclusively vegetarian and vegan restaurant. The Kathal Lazeez (jackfruit curry) is the star of the plant-based show – try it with a bowl of fragrant mushroom rice.

The Meet, London

This pop-up serves indulgent plant-based comfort food. Enjoy sharing plates, burgers and curries, as well a bottomless vegan brunch, Sunday roast and vegan cocktails.

Anna Loka, Cardiff

You might think Anna Loka’s glowing reviews are just hyperbole – until you try their triple cooked chips for yourself. The breakfast menu of pancakes and filled rolls is enough to make you a morning person and Krishna’s mighty whole food bowl is not so much a dinner as a new best friend.

Levant, London

Make sure you arrive at Levant hungry for a Lebanese feast. Located just off Oxford Street, it’s the ideal place to refuel after some serious shopping. Much of the food here is vegetarian or can be made vegan; the tahini cauliflower, roasted chickpeas and spicy sweet potato dishes are a must-try.

Food For Friends, Brighton

Using locally sourced ingredients to produce a seasonal menu, this is haute vegetarian and vegan eating at affordable prices. The courgette kofta and black olive polenta deserve a special shout-out.

17-18 Prince Albert Street, BN1; foodforfriends.com

Texture, London

Go big with the seven-course vegan tasting menu at this Michelin starred restaurant. Their modern European dishes peppered with Scandi influences are suitably wintery – we recommend the rice pudding with clementine, cinnamon and chestnuts.

David Bann, Edinburgh

David Bann’s eponymous high-end restaurant is 100% vegetarian and has plenty to offer dairy-free eaters too, with a globally inspired menu of fusion dishes sweeping from the Med to the Pacific via India and Thailand. A true crowd-pleaser.

Gauthier, London

If you’re looking for fine dining, Gauthier will not disappoint. In 2015, it became the first Michelin starred restaurant in the country to offer a vegan tasting menu. It’s a truly luxe experience, thanks to dishes like the saffron roasted butternut squash with fondant plantain and coconut crisp.

Bluebell, Swansea

This sibling-run restaurant with tonnes of vegan options has quickly developed a devoted fanbase thanks to a killer menu. Peanut butter pancakes with maple syrup is a strong contender for death row meal.
