When it comes to naming your dog or cat, there’s a lot to think about.

Does it suit your pet’s temperament, breed and energy levels? Does it give strangers some idea about your puppy or kitten’s unique personality?

And, most importantly of all, does it fit on the collar?

If you’re in need of a little pet name inspiration, then you’re in luck: Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has conducted some research into the most popular cat and dog names of 2016 – and it seems as if pop culture has had a big effect on use this year, with people looking to films, TV shows, and book characters for pooch and moggy monikers.

Charlie and Bella top the list of most popular names for male and female dogs respectively – suggesting there are more than a few Twilight-appreciating pet owners out there.

Oliver and Luna, meanwhile, have taken the number one spots on the male and female cat names lists. Anyone else thinking that Harry Potter may have had something to do with that?

There's crossover between the species too, with Lucy, Luna, Max, Charlie and Daisy, among others, appearing on both cat and dog lists.

While this is all well and good, it’s also worth spending some time and picking out a name that your dog responds well to.

Experts have said that you want to look for a short name -one or two syllables max – as anything more complex is difficult for your pup to wrap his head around, and makes training very difficult.

They’ve also suggested picking a name with a hard/stop consonant, as it’s easier to grab their attention that way.

We’d say to do the same for cats, but they’re such fiercely independent little things that we doubt even the snappiest of attention-grabbing names would do.

It’s almost impossible to coax them in for a cuddle unless we have something to use as a bribe.

Whatever you decide, just remember that it’s a good idea to spend some time getting to know your pooch before you name him or her, so that you can get to know exactly what they’re like.

After all, a pet is for life, which means that his or her name is, too – make sure you put the effort in to pick one that’s absolutely perfect.
