It’s not only end-of-year poll season, but that time when we start deciding which CDs we want for Christmas. So we asked around Stylist Towers and got the team to tell us their single of 2010. Here are the dozen top choices - and you can listen to them free as a playlist on Spotify. Hope you like it. We do
The Xx – Intro
“Yes, it ended up being used in loads of ads, but the album this is taken from was THE soundtrack of the summer. Dark, moody yet weirdly uplifting and like nothing else out there.” Joanna McGarry, Beauty Director
Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind (Part II Broken Down)
The song that got the most votes from Team Stylist. Both versions were suggested but being sticklers, we’ve gone for Alicia’s anthemic solo one, as that came out in Feburary 2010. The original duet with Jay Z was late 2009, fact fans.
Tinie Tempah – Pass Out
“The lyrics of Tinie’s debut hit are hilarious (‘I’ve got so many clothes I leave them in my aunt’s house’) and the drop at the beginning is mint. I was in Ibiza over the summer and it played about 5 times a night.” Amy Grier, Junior Writer
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are
“Bruno Mars had a number one hit with it, but I must confess that it was Matt Cardle’s version on X Factor that really made me love this” Megan Conner, Senior Writer
Warpaint – Undertow
“Understated and atmospheric. This all-girl LA indie quartet who supported The Xx were my top band of 2010.” JP Nicholas, Deputy Production Editor
Wild Beasts – Hooting & Howling
“This unassuming quartet from Cumbria made my favourite album of the year. Like Kate Bush snogging an opera singer down the indie disco. ” Michael Hogan, Contributing Editor
Beach House - Zebra
“Dream-pop from Baltimore that I’ve been listening to non-stop for the past six months.” Kevin Fay, Creative Solutions Art Director
The Drums - Let’s Go Surfing
“Beautifully jangly, massively upbeat and enough to make you smile on the most miserable Monday morning.” Leon Poultney, Creative Solutions Editor
Cee Lo Green – Forget You
“This song’s addictively happy, yet the lyrics have a dark side. It’s the musical equivalent of giving someone the finger and them complimenting your manicure.” Kate Graham, Web Writer
I Am Arrows - Nun
“The lyrics to this tune by ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows are so obscure I can't decide if it's a deeply romantic love song, or a post break-up hate you song. Either way it's my favourite bouncing around while doing the cleaning number.” Rebecca Jenkins, Associate Editor (Online)
Kylie – All The Lovers
“Ms Minogue’s comeback single this summer saw her retrurn to the dancefloor where she belongs. Welcome back, brave Kylie.” Tom Gormer, Photography Director
Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand
“Deliriously catchy disco tune by the American DJ duo. Sampling Boney M and named after St Babs, it always makes me want to dance.” Alex Beeson, Account Director
