Make the most of every moment this new season with these inspirational exhibitions, must-visit markets, watch list recs and so much more…
It’s official: summer is behind us, along with its barbecues, day festivals and (in true British fashion) plentiful rain showers. Now, we’re turning our attention to autumn – and, crucially, how we’ll be spending our days throughout the coming months. Our new season bucket lists, if you will.
To help us put together our autumn agendas, we’ve turned to Divine Chocolate. This autumn, they’ve partnered with Clara Amfo on ‘Divine Curated’: a series of empowering and inspirational recommendations for you to watch, listen to and visit.
Ready to discover something new? From eye-opening exhibitions to sustainable fashion events you won’t forget in a hurry, get inspired and add these to your cultural calendar, stat.
1. El Anatsui at Tate Modern
The iconic Turbine Hall at London’s Tate Modern has played host to some incredible artists over the years. You might remember Ai Weiwei’s handmade porcelain sunflower seeds back in 2010 or Anicka Yi’s bobbing drone jellyfish in 2021.
Come October, the Turbine Hall will be taken over by Ghana-based sculptor El Anatsui for an installation that promises to dazzle.
“El Anatsui is definitely someone who does things differently,” says Amfo. “This man is almost 80 years old and isn’t taking a break any time soon.”
10 October 2023 - 14 April 2024; free.
2. Black History Month on Radio 1Xtra
“Keep your eyes and ears on Radio 1Xtra throughout October,” Amfo recommends.
“They always celebrate Black History Month in a great way – whether it’s 1Xtra Talks with Richie Brave, guest mixes or impressive takeovers.
“This year’s Black History Month also coincides with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.”
October; BBC Sounds app.
3. Champion on BBC iPlayer
If, like us, you devoured 2019’s Queenie, you’re certain to love Champion, created and written by author Candice Carty-Williams. Now streaming on BBC iPlayer, the series tells the explosive story of the talented Champion siblings, pitted against one another in their bid to top the charts.
A love letter to Black British music, watch out for a few familiar faces including Ray BLK – who also partnered with grime pioneer Ghetts as the music execs on the series.
Streaming now; BBC iPlayer.
4. Rebel: 30 Years Of London Fashion
Celebrating the global impact London has on the design world, this landmark exhibition spotlights three decades of fearless young designers who have transformed the fashion landscape across the capital.
Featuring nearly 100 looks from the early collections of groundbreaking London-based designers, keep your eyes peeled for Björk’s iconic swan dress and Harry Styles’ Steven Stokey Daley-designed outfit from the Golden music video.
16 September 2023 - 11 February 2024; £18-£20; Design Museum.
5. DIY Art Market
Championing a diverse community of artists and independent publishers, Peckham’s DIY Art Market is the perfect spot to find your new favourite piece – all while engaging directly with the artists selling their creations.
Expect everything from experimental ceramics to eye-catching prints. This is the home of inspiration.
Various dates; DIY Art Market; Peckham.
6. The Missing Thread: Untold Stories Of Black British Fashion
Discover how the cultural – and counter-cultural – backdrop of the past five decades has shaped the identity of Black style and, in turn, mainstream fashion culture.
A celebration of Black creativity in Britain, this exhibition digs deep into the socio-economic contexts which inspired the culture of Black British fashion to develop on its own terms.
21 September 2023 - 7 January 2024; £12; Somerset House, London.
7. Sustainable Fashion Week
The first of its kind, Sustainable Fashion Week features a jam-packed programme of community-led activities to inspire, upskill and empower you to embrace a fair fashion future.
This year’s theme celebrates everything preloved and secondhand, and with hubs in cities across the country, from Bristol to Bradford, there’s plenty to check out. Discover film screenings, workshops, ‘sip n swaps’, and so much more.
25 September - 8 October; across the UK.
8. Death Of England: Closing Time
The final, standalone chapter in Clint Dyer and Roy Williams’ award-winning exploration of identity, race and class in Britain, Closing Time follows Denise and her daughter-in-law Carly as they attempt to navigate the loss of their family shop – and their destroyed dreams.
Bring your tissues, this promises to be a seriously thought-provoking one.
13 September - 11 November 2023; National Theatre, London.
