“Hey, I really like you’re profile, U wanna go for drinks tomoz in centrel?”

If you’ve ever received this craftily worded message on a dating site, we’re sorry to say you’re not alone – however you wouldn’t be alone either in your decision not to pursue this date.

New research by The Wall Street Journal proves bad grammar is most definitely a turn off when it comes to online dating.

It looked at some case studies of singles who had rejected potential dates due to incorrect spelling or punctuation.

One user for example, Jeff Cohen, compared a suitor’s incorrect use of ‘their’ to finding out she had a cat (he’s allergic).

“It’s like learning I’m going to sneeze every time I see her,” he said. Another candidate secured a rendez-vous with his future wife because he bothered to send her a perfectly articulate message which stood out for her.

Meanwhile, an analysis of profiles by proofreading company Grammarly showed that a man with two spelling mistakes in his bio was 14% less likely than others to receive a positive response.

And after dating site Match asked over 5,000 singles in the US which criteria they valued most in dating profiles, a whopping 96% of women revealed it was grammar, over a person’s confidence and teeth.

So why are we so turned off by basic mistakes? After all, we’re all a little bit guilty of using abbreviations in text messages and so forth, aren't we?

Many experts say it’s because it shows a lack of effort, pure and simple, while perfect grammar shows intelligence and care.

“When you get a message that is grammatically correct and has a voice and is put together, it is very attractive, it definitely adds hotness points,” says New Yorker Grace Gold.
