A jazzy new alarm system promises to banish couple wake-up angst forever more by gently rousing one person at a time.

Wakē is a modern clock that's designed to wake you with a personal sunrise and focused sounds that won't interrupt whoever happens to be sharing your bed.

The invention - which is taking shape via a Kickstarter project - aims to cut out that awkward moment when both people are jolted awake by the blare of an alarm clock.

"In the 21st century, people shouldn’t wake up in the dark, lose sleep to their partner’s alarm, or be jolted awake by a buzzer," say Lucera Labs, the Los Angeles-based engineer team behind the project. 

"It’s time to rethink how we wake up."

Wakē is a wall-mounted alarm that's operated by a smartphone.

It uses a body heat sensor to seek out exactly where you are, sending a warm white LED light to illuminate your face, simulating the effect of a sunrise to gently rouse you.

It then delivers soothing sounds to you, via laser beam of sound known as a "parametric speaker".

This clever technology creates a very narrow audible beam; it will only be directed at the person needing the alarm, without disturbing anyone else nearby. This is true even if you happen to be snuggled right up to somebody else. 

The sound gets gradually louder to wake you up slowly, without the sudden sense of panic associated with a normal alarm.

All you need to do is tell Wakē which side of the bed you sleep, and how you want to wake up.

So instead of morning grouchiness and the potential for lingering resentment at your partner for waking you up, you emerge calm and refreshed.

The project is still in development right now and will go into production once its target is reached on Kickstarter. It's currently raised $47,953 (£32,282) of its $100,000 (£67,000) goal. See more about the alarm in the video, below.
