There's plenty of reasons to love London. Commuting, however, is not one of them.
Now a new map, released by Transport For London, is here to educate us on just how quick a bracing walk in the fresh(ish) air could be as an alternative to our sticky, sweaty, unpleasant tube journey.
The new map is a brilliant reminder of just how small London actually is, when you piece it together.
So now you can figure out if it really is worth tapping into your Oyster card credit to get from place to place, when getting from Holborn to Covent Garden is actually only a five minute walk – regular visitors to the latter will know it can take you that time alone just to get in a lift out of the station.
TFL developed the map after different unofficial takes on the London tube map proved to be incredibly popular, such as one created by website Thrillist outlining the average rent prices across London towns.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, a spokesperson for TFL explained:
“What we have seen is that people are desperate for this sort of thing, so we have created it. We focused on central London, zones 1 and 2, and based the times off our journey planner.
“It’s often quite a difficult message for us because people think we just do the Tube and buses, but we’re also responsible for roads, walking and cycling. We’re investing heavily in improving walking and cycling routes across London, with all the health benefits they bring. This is going to be great for people to see how quick and easy it is to so many stations.”
As well as inspiring city workers to walk the final steps to work and informing tourists that maybe hoping on and off tubes is more hassle than it’s worth, considering we’re still waiting for the 24 hour lines to kick in, this may come in handy those evenings when you’ve missed your last tube home.
