Stylist's Elsewhere story on the UK rape conviction rate: a response

Last week (3 August) we published a  story in the Elsewhere section of Stylist magazine which stated that 58% of rape cases in the UK lead to conviction.

There are numerous ways of calculating rape statistics. When we said this, we were using the Crown Prosecution Service definition for where a decision to charge had been taken (which is the statistic used in their annual Violence against Women and Girls reports). Of the cases that made it to court, 58% were prosecuted.

Many of you were quite right to point out that there are hundreds of attacks each year that  never make it to court, and so in those terms the conviction rate stands at only 6% or less.

We are sorry for any confusion this caused.
