Sci-fi isn’t a genre always hailed for its depiction of women, but Star Wars has provided young girls with a solid female hero for years (even if behind the camera, equality was reportedly not quite as visible to begin with).
Now Lucasfilm is celebrating the women characters of the franchise with a series of short animations ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s release in December.
The first episode to be released under the Forces of Destiny banner is one focused on Rey (Daisy Ridley) saving her beloved BB-8, titled Sands of Jakku.

In a ‘making-of’ teaser trailer, Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, says: “For many years, something that’s been really important to Star Wars is these characters that little kids can grow up [with] and recognise a little bit of themselves.”
Upcoming episodes will highlight more Star Wars women, such as Jyn (Felicity Jones) and Princess Leia (who will be voiced by Shelby Young), while Lupita Nyong’o once again voices Maz Kanata. There’ll be 16 self-contained adventures in total, taking place in different times and places in the Star Wars universe.
As Mashable reports, the key message of the project is to reveal how small decisions can have big consequences.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released 15 December.
