I lived out my Spice Girls fantasies and recreated the Wannabe video, and you can too

The Spice Girls are about to kick off their UK-wide tour and there’s no better way to celebrate girl power in London than this.

I’ve got some devastating news: I didn’t get tickets to the Spice Girls tour

I know, it’s a true disaster for a girl power-loving millennial like myself who imagined singing with reckless, blaring abandon to the anthems that littered her formative years, arms strung around the shoulders of her equally Spicy friends.

I tried, I really did, but alas it was not written in the zig-a-zig-ah stars. But instead of hanging up my Union Jack mini dress and kicking off my platforms, I discovered other ways to spice up my life around London, where a young Baby, Sporty, Scary, Ginger and Posh had once frolicked in Nineties.

The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, the majestic 19th century building sitting next to King’s Cross station, has been home to many iconic cinematic moments appearing in films such as Batman, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Bridget Jones

But arguably the hotel’s most famous gig has been as the setting for the Spice Girls’ first ever music video, Wannabe.

Back in 1996, our pioneers of friendship forever were widely unknown, and it is here in a central London five-star hotel that they first wowed the world with their mischief and confidence, shouting out lyrics like “if you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.”

In case you need your memory jogging (or back flipping I should say, if Mel C had anything to do with it) the original girl gang ran into the hotel, pushing past concierge staff and kissing guests as they went, making a stop on the winding staircase to throw some shapes.

This year, to celebrate the return of these musical icons to the stage, the hotel has created a package which invites three friends to live out their Spice Girls fantasies and take those red-carpeted stairs by storm. I, of course, was more than a little bit excited to try it out.

The package is just for three people, so you’ll have to pick apart your group carefully, and for me it was my Posh and Sporty that made the cut.

Arriving at the hotel we were whisked upstairs to our spacious room which had a huge, ornate window looking into St Pancras station – a definite wow moment and a room I reckon the girls themselves would be happy to spend the night in.

After a nibble on a selection of themed chocolate eclairs, we practically ran downstairs to meet our PRIVATE photographer who ooh’ed and aah’ed as we pranced around on the infamous steps, sporting wigs, microphones, props and masks. Sporty even managed to get herself into the splits as a valiant effort for the shoot. It was getting her out of them that was the bloody problem.

After securing ‘the shot’ (didn’t take us long, we’re professionals, naturally) we joined our own personal mixologist who talked us through the hotel bar’s new cocktail menu, each one inspired by a different singer.

Although Posh won’t be joining the tour, the Re-Spiced menu does not discriminate, and VB has been in honoured in one of the carefully crafted tipples namely Posh on the Rocks which mixes Absolut Citrus, Elderflower St. Germain, Briotett and white cacao, with a finish of gold glitter.

All of the cocktails were delicious, even more so because we had a go at making them, I think. A personal highlight was when my cocktail shaker exploded all over me, ending any chances of a mixologist career and delighting my friends.

Once we’d had a go at making each one (my favourite is the Bloody Scary which mixes Chilli infused Mezcal, Bold London Spirit, strawberry puree, Grenadine and lime juice), we took our cocktails downstairs to the railway-themed Booking Office bar and continued sipping them into the evening.

Although I’m still hoping that the Spice Girls gods will smile upon me, read this article, and gift me with some tickets of my own, having our own photographer for a photoshoot like my Instagram has never seen was the perfect tribute the girl band of my dreams.

The package is priced at £659 which includes the pastries, photoshoot, cocktail class, a Re-Spiced cocktail in the Booking Office, access to the Chambers club where you can enjoy food and drink all day, including afternoon tea and pre-dinner canapés and one night in the Chambers Grand Junior Suite set up for three, where you can sing Spice Girls hits all night to your heart’s content.

Check out the package here, and once you’ve booked that, check out this very exciting Airbnb listing
