It’s been a terrible year, if we’re honest; we’ve had to cope with Brexit, Donald Trump, the downfall of The Great British Bake Off, and a horrifying Toblerone makeover.
But, as D:Ream would say, things can only get better.
The words of wisdom from 90s popstars have often proven to be of comfort during difficult times / awkward school discos – and, in this case, they seem oddly fitting. As, shortly after the news of Donald Trump’s election broke, the Spice Girls revealed that they were back in the studio.
Well, some of them, at least.
Geri Horner and Emma Bunton – two of the original five members of the girl power band, alongside Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria Beckham – have taken to Instagram to confirm that they’re back to doing what they do best: making amazing music.
The photo, on the account of Geri (aka Ginger Spice), was simply captioned: “In the studio, ooh.”
Considering that it’s not long until the 21st anniversary of their debut single Wannabe, it seems safe to predict that the singers are making good on their promise to spice up our lives for the occasion, having already confirmed that the two of them, along with Mel B, are planning a concert and brand-new material.
However any new music that they produce together will not be able to bear the name of the Spice Girls upon it, as both the erstwhile Sporty and Posh are declining to take part in the reunion.
Instead, the trio will be styling themselves as GEM (an acronym formed from the initials of their first names) – although they will be acquiring two new members for the concert, which is planned to take place sometime in 2017.
Speaking to James Corden on The Late Late Show, Mel B explained: “[Victoria and Mel C] gracefully said, ‘You three go ahead and do it’. We are girl power and we support each other so us three went, ‘OK, well then let’s us three do it’.
“I don’t think we could ever replace [them],” she said. “But I’d like to invite other people to sing with us.”
They will also be joining forces with the BBC to create a new talent show, Wannabe, in the style of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
Wannabe will essentially see ‘wannabe’ Spice Girls come up and sing in front of Emma, Geri and Mel B in an X Factor-style audition – and, yes, anyone can audition.
The heats will take place over five weeks next April, followed by a week of live shows, with winners announced during a live finale on BBC1.
Excuse us while we fish out our platform shoes… we have an audition to prepare for!
