Lunchtime for a crocodile can be a thrilling experience for tourists - especially when the diner in question is a five-and-a-half metre beast called Brutus.

The enormous saltwater croc sent heart rates soaring recently as he burst from the depths of Australia's Adelaide River in front of a boatload of sightseers on (what had been) a leisurely cruise.

Tourist Katrina Bridgeford captured the moment Brutus emerged just yards away from the boat to munch on a tasty piece of buffalo meat.

"There was a lot of oohs and aahs and oh my god," Katrina said. "I wasn't expecting anything like this. I couldn't believe how close it got to us. If you put your hand out, you would've touched it."

Her 11-year-old son Dylan apparently only had two words to say: "Holy crap!"

According to cruise operators Harry Bowmancom Brutus, the 80-year-old crocodile is a favourite among tourists thanks to his penchant for buffalo meat - and the show he always puts on to get it.

However, life hasn't always been kind to him, as he once lost his front leg in a shark leg.

Take a closer look at the incredible images of Brutus get stuck into lunch in adrenalin-pumping style below.
