This never-before-seen SATC clip reveals one iconic outfit nearly didn’t happen

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) became something of a fashion icon thanks to her eclectic wardrobe on HBO’s Sex and the City.

But, despite her plethora of outfits during the six-season run, there’s one in particular we tend to associate her with.

We’re talking, of course, about that tutu in the opening credits.

However, as it turns out, Carrie wasn’t meant to wear a tutu at all and studio bosses filmed an entirely different sequence – which saw SJP’s character dressed in something far more… well, far more ordinary.

“There were two wardrobes. One was the tutu, and we did one pass where Sarah Jessica [Parker] was wearing a blue dress and didn’t get splashed; instead, she trips when she sees the ad [on the bus for her column],” show creator Darren Star tells EW.

“In my mind, it was a nod to The Dick Van Dyke Show, but we didn’t use it. It’s in the archives.”

However, in honour of the show’s (almost) 20th anniversary, HBO has unveiled the original opening credits for SATC fans all over the world to marvel at.

And as it’s pretty similar, it’s a slightly surreal watch given how familiar we are with the sequence – almost like being in an alternate reality. An alternate reality where, say, Carrie opts for Aidan over Big, dresses like a completely different person and doesn’t wonder about all that much at all, perhaps?

Watch the clip below:

Costume designer Patricia Field added that she and SJP had to fight for the tutu scene to be used in the final cut – and pointed out that they had a very important reason for demanding she wear the $5 tutu, too.

“It was very difficult for the producers to understand the tutu. Sarah Jessica and I were fighting for it, and Darren said, ‘Okay, but I want other outfits as possibilities.’”

And as we know, Star came round to the idea and now says of the ensemble: “It was such a brilliant choice because, in a way, Carrie’s dancing through her life in New York.”

We wholeheartedly agree.
