Serena Williams has announced the name of her and her fiancé’s newborn baby girl.
Williams took to Instagram to share the happy news with her fans just over two weeks after giving birth, revealing that the couple have chosen to give their new arrival the same moniker as her dad.
Posting a snap of the newborn’s tiny face peacefully lying on her mum’s chest, the sportswoman introduced her new daughter to her 6.5 million followers, writing, “Meet Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. You have to check out link in bio for her amazing journey.”
Yes, baby Alexis seems to have been named after her dad, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Although the family are yet to give any insight into their choice, it sounds like she’s set to be as strong and championing as her mother if her moniker meaning is anything to go by. The latest addition to the Ohanian clan’s first name, Alexis, means ‘to help or defend’, while her middle name, Olympia, means ‘sanctuary’.
Alongside the picture of her little one, Williams shared a video depicting her pregnancy journey via a compilation of adorable home footage, sometimes addressed to their unborn child, showing the athlete’s growing bump, tennis practice and dancing at home.
The video finishes on baby Alexis all dressed up in a ridiculously cute outfit and being cuddled by her family, before stating that she weighed 6lbs 4oz, with a total of one grand slam title at the time of birth.
The tennis champion and feminist gave birth on 1 September at the St Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, California.
Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, tweeted his congratulations at the time, writing, “Congratulations @SerenaWilliams for your baby girl. I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion. Recover well & enjoy without limitation.”
Before alluding that Williams’s career won’t be slowing down anytime soon by adding, “Btw @serenawilliams I wish you a speedy recovery... we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Williams has shared her pregnancy with her fans in the lead up to giving birth, posting numerous images of her growing stomach and discussing the changes she was going through.
In August, the sporting star shared an image on Instagram from a photo shoot with Vogue around the time she (accidentally) announced her pregnancy. Shot by Mario Testino, Williams looks effortlessly defiant and beautifully strong in a flowing, cream gown and bare feet, though in a caption alongside she describes the extreme tiredness she felt whilst doing the shoot: “I was so energetic that day but then I remember being totally exhausted and needed to take a break for an hour.
“I was still trying to understand this whole pregnancy process.”
Ever since the announcement of baby Alexis’s birth there’s been an outpouring of love for Williams on social media, with fans taking to her Instagram to express their congratulations.
One Instagram user commented: “Congratulation @serenawilliams may you and your daughter, be in the best health and glory. I hope you two will give ‘mom n daughter’ goals, coz u will be the best inspiration to ur daughter congratulations !!!!!”

Supermodel BFF and coder Karlie Kloss, who recently traveled two and a half hours to have dinner with Williams, tweeted, “Congratulations @SerenaWilliams and @alexisohanian on your beautiful baby girl! ...Auntie Karlie is ready to babysit.”
Beyonce, aka Queen Bey, also shared an image of Williams’s pregnancy photo shoot to Instagram, captioned with the words, “Congratulations, Serena!”
Erm, can we have Beyonce and Karlie Kloss as aunties?
From the looks of things, it’s safe to this little lady will be set for incredible female role models.
