This year Sainsbury's has opted out of a tear-jerking Christmas advert by resurrecting childhood favourite Mog the Cat in a witty short film.

Voiced by Emma Thompson, the advert sees author Judith Kerr's famous cat character, Mog, set off a chain of unfortunate events which almost ruin Christmas for the Thomas family.

But when all seems lost, the neighbours come to rescue the day (OK, that part is actually rather touching). 

Ninety-two-year-old Kerr, who also wrote The Tiger who Came to Tea, makes a guest appearance in the film and has also written and illustrated the first new Mog book since 2002 titled Mog's Christmas Calamity, exclusively for the supermarket giant.

Sales of the book will be donated to Save the Children to contribute towards improving child literacy in the UK.

Last year, the Sainsbury's Christmas advert depicted a real scene from World War One in 1914 when German and British soldiers held a series of unofficial ceasefires over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, called the Christmas truce. Soldiers from both sides even walked across to no-man's land to exchange gifts and food.
