Sabrina the Teenage Witch is conjuring up a seriously dark TV reboot

Sabrina the Teenage Witch was one of the best kids shows on television – not to mention a seriously empowering series for young feminists everywhere. So, naturally, we kind of lost our minds when we learned that The CW (aka the same producers who blessed us with Riverdale) is conjuring up a dark Sabrina TV reboot for adults everywhere.

And when we say dark, we mean dark.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been pegged as a coming-of-age story “that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

In the series, Sabrina will be seen struggling to come to terms with her half-human, half-witch heritage as she tries to protect her family and friends from dark forces looming over Riverdale's neighbouring community Greendale.

So we imagine that means less magical costume changes and more jump scares, eerie darkened hallways and monsters straight out of our nightmares. Especially when you consider the fact that producers are saying it will be similar in tone to “Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist”.

Gulp.

The project, which is being eyed for a 2018-2019 release, will be penned by Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Lee Toland Krieger, who is attached to direct should the project move forward.

However, in terms of casting, we have yet to discover the young half-witch brave enough to step into Melissa Joan Hart’s shoes. And nobody’s mentioned Salem Saberhagen once, which seems like a gross oversight to us (what could be more terrifying than a smooth-talking cat who’s hell-bent on world destruction, eh?).

So what’s the link with Riverdale – the critically-acclaimed Netflix drama based on the iconic Archie comics?

Well, Aguirre-Sacasa, in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, made a big point of reminding us that Sabrina was actually an Archie comics creation too.

“Some people don’t even know that Sabrina is in the Archie family,” he told them

“There is absolutely a universe where Sabrina pops up in Riverdale or one town over in Greendale. Certainly, the priority is launching Riverdale and making sure that show is as good as it can be and as embraced as we want it to be.”

Aguirre-Sacasa added: “We've talked about Sabrina being something that's a bit darker, a bit Rosemary's Baby. It's not going to be the half-hour sitcom with Melissa Joan Hart, but it depends on the property.”

Consider us intrigued…
